PM Modi Announces First Made-in-India Semiconductor Chip by Year-End, India Racing Ahead on 6G Development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a significant technological milestone for India at The Economic Times World Leaders Forum on August 23, 2025. He revealed that India's first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip will be available in the market by the end of this year, marking the country's leap into semiconductor self-reliance after decades of missed opportunities. Modi also emphasized that India is rapidly advancing in developing a "Made-in-India" 6G network, aiming to keep pace with global telecom innovations.

Modi acknowledged that semiconductor manufacturing could have started in India 50 to 60 years ago but missed the chance due to past policy and governance challenges. "Today, we have changed this situation. Semiconductor-related factories have started coming up in India," he said. The first homegrown chip’s market debut by year-end signifies a new era for India's technology and manufacturing sectors.

Alongside this, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s progress in telecom technology, stating, "We are working rapidly on Made-in-India 6G," underscoring the government's vision to remain at the forefront of global digital advancements. Modi reiterated India's success in building and deploying a comprehensive 5G stack domestically at a fast pace and declared that the country will not lag in adopting 6G technology.

Furthering India's ambitions in innovation and exports, Modi announced plans for India to become a major player in the electric vehicle (EV) sector by exporting EVs to 100 countries worldwide. Announcements of upcoming programs tied to these initiatives signify India's expanding role on the global technology and manufacturing stage.

The government’s semiconductor push is supported by a robust program including startups, academia, and incentives that nurture chip design and production ecosystems. Multiple semiconductor manufacturing units are underway, with plans for silicon fabs and advanced packaging facilities already approved or in construction. This concerted effort reflects India's determination to build a strong semiconductor industry after missed chances in the past.
